Admiral sells buildings and contents insurance across three tiers — Admiral, Gold and Platinum — and the differences between them are more specific than the names suggest.

Buildings cover is unlimited rebuild cost on all three, which removes the single biggest risk in home insurance: under-insuring the structure. Where they diverge is contents, which runs £100,000 on Admiral, £125,000 on Gold and £150,000 on Platinum, and in what comes included rather than as a paid extra.

The clause that catches most people is the same at every tier: any single item worth more than £2,000 must be specified individually or it is not covered for its full value. That applies to an engagement ring, a road bike, a laptop, a watch. It is the most common reason a contents claim pays out less than the owner expected.

Which tier, decided by what is included rather than the headline

The contents limits — £100,000, £125,000, £150,000 — are a distraction for most households. Very few people have £100,000 of contents, so that ceiling rarely binds.

What actually separates the tiers is what stops being an add-on:

  • Admiral — accidental damage, home emergency and legal cover are all optional extras.
  • Gold — audiovisual accidental damage and home emergency (£500) are included. Full contents accidental damage and legal remain optional.
  • Platinum — everything is included: full accidental damage, home emergency at £1,000, and legal cover up to £100,000.

Price the add-ons individually before assuming the base tier is cheaper. Buying Admiral plus accidental damage plus home emergency plus legal frequently costs more than Platinum with all four built in, and leaves you with a lower home emergency limit.

Accidental damage is the add-on worth having if you have children, pets or hard flooring. It covers the spilled paint, the foot through the ceiling, the television knocked off its stand — none of which are covered by standard contents cover.

Unlimited rebuild cost removes the classic mistake

Under-insurance on buildings is the most expensive error in home insurance, and it is easy to make. Rebuild cost is not market value — it is what it would cost to demolish and reconstruct the property, and on older or unusual houses it can exceed what the house would sell for.

Get that figure too low and insurers apply average: insure for half the true rebuild cost and a £20,000 claim pays £10,000, even though £20,000 is well within your sum insured.

Admiral offers unlimited rebuild cost cover on all three tiers, which sidesteps the problem entirely. You are not asked to estimate a figure you have no way of calculating accurately.

For a period property, a thatched roof, a converted barn or anything non-standard, that is worth more than a small premium difference elsewhere.

The £2,000 rule is the one to act on

Contents cover pays out per item as well as in total. Admiral's unspecified single-item limit is £2,000 across all tiers. Anything worth more must be listed by name on the policy.

What that catches in an ordinary house:

  • An engagement or wedding ring — frequently over £2,000 on its own
  • A road or e-bike — £3,000 is unremarkable now
  • A camera body plus lenses, if claimed as one item
  • A watch, a laptop, a musical instrument

Claim for a stolen £4,500 ring that was never specified and you receive £2,000. The shortfall is not a technicality — it is what the policy says.

Do this before you buy, not at renewal: walk through the house and list anything worth more than £2,000, then declare each one. It usually adds little to the premium and it is the difference between being insured and being partly insured.

MultiCover, and the fees to price in

MultiCover discounts home insurance when you also hold Admiral car cover. If your car is already with Admiral, get the home quote before shopping elsewhere — the bundled price is often below what a standalone home policy costs.

The reverse holds too: if you are buying home insurance here and your car renews soon, price the pair together rather than separately.

Two fees to factor in. Around £15 to amend a policy, and £60 to £160 to cancel. Home policies get amended more than people expect — adding a specified item, a change after building work, a new occupant — and those £15s accumulate. The cancellation fee matters if you move house mid-term, which is common enough to price in rather than ignore.

Where it wins

  • Unlimited rebuild cost on buildings across all three tiers, removing under-insurance risk
  • Platinum bundles full accidental damage, £1,000 home emergency and legal cover as standard
  • MultiCover discount when bundled with Admiral car insurance
  • Contents limits up to £150,000 on Platinum
  • Clear three-tier structure rather than a confusing add-on maze
  • Gold includes audiovisual accidental damage and home emergency as standard

Where it falls short

  • £2,000 single-item limit means valuables must be specified individually or are underpaid
  • Base Admiral tier makes accidental damage, home emergency and legal all paid extras
  • Home emergency capped at £500 on Admiral and Gold, half the Platinum limit
  • £60–£160 cancellation fee stings if you move house mid-term
  • £15 amendment fee adds up when specifying items or changing details
  • Contents ceilings are largely irrelevant to most households, which makes tier comparison harder than it looks

Common questions

Does Admiral cover buildings and contents together?

Yes. You can buy buildings and contents as a combined policy across all three tiers. Buildings cover is unlimited rebuild cost; contents is capped at £100,000, £125,000 or £150,000 depending on tier.

What is the single-item limit?

£2,000. Anything worth more must be specified individually on the policy or it will only be covered up to £2,000. This catches engagement rings, bikes, watches and cameras most often.

Is accidental damage included?

Only on Platinum for full contents. Gold includes accidental damage for audiovisual equipment. On the base Admiral tier it is an optional extra for both.

What does unlimited rebuild cost mean?

You are not asked to estimate what it would cost to rebuild your home, so you cannot under-insure it. Under-insuring buildings triggers 'average', where claims are scaled down in proportion to the shortfall.

How much is home emergency cover?

£500 on the Admiral tier as an optional extra, £500 included on Gold, and £1,000 included on Platinum.

Our verdict

Strong on the thing that matters most — unlimited rebuild cost on buildings at every tier means you cannot under-insure the structure, which is the costliest mistake in home insurance. Compare Platinum against the base tier with add-ons bolted on before deciding; Platinum frequently wins on price and always wins on the home emergency limit. Whichever tier you take, list every item worth over £2,000 before the policy starts. If your car is already with Admiral, get the MultiCover quote first.
