Anglo Welsh Canal Boat Holidays: Nine Wharves, 2 to 12 Berths and the Small Print

A self-drive narrowboat holiday with Anglo Welsh starts at £735 for a short break on a two-berth boat and £995 for a full week, and no licence or previous boating is needed because a member of staff walks every crew through the boat before it leaves the wharf. Figures checked on 29 September 2026 against Anglo Welsh's own boat pages and booking terms. For its 2026 season the company cut summer prices by 11%, which it puts at £40 off a boat for two and up to £300 off a boat for ten.
The firm has been hiring canal boats for close to sixty years and now runs nine bases: Bath, Bradford on Avon and Monkton Combe on the Kennet & Avon, Bunbury on the Shropshire Union, Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey, Silsden on the Leeds & Liverpool, Trevor and Whixall on the Llangollen, and Wootton Wawen on the Stratford Canal. A tenth, at Tardebigge on the Worcester & Birmingham, is due to open for 2027 and takes telephone bookings only. Boats run from compact 48ft two-berths up to Ocean Class boats that sleep ten, and a wide beam at Silsden sleeps eight.
The hire price includes more than some rivals bother to list: parking at the base, bed linen, towels, gas, water, pump-outs, a smokeless log or two for the stove and unlimited Wi-Fi on board, though the company admits the signal rides a mobile network and can be patchy. The first dog travels free. Diesel is the main thing you pay for on top, through a refundable fuel deposit.

Who runs the boats, and from where
Behind the brand is Anglo Welsh Limited, company number 04062985, incorporated on 31 August 2000 as Aquatravel Limited and renamed on 26 October 2007. It is registered in Bath and classed at Companies House under SIC 55209, other holiday and collective accommodation. The hire business itself is much older than the company number — the 2021 brochure already spoke of more than 55 years of experience.
Ownership has sat inside the same Bath office for several years. Chatleigh Limited became the controlling shareholder in March 2020, Anglo Welsh (Holdings) Limited took over in December 2021, and since 3 February 2026 the person with significant control is SG Aerospace (UK) Limited, a company incorporated in 1972 and registered at the same Oldfield Road address. Nothing about that reshuffle changes who a customer books with or rings.
The network has grown rather than shrunk. In April 2024 Anglo Welsh took over Sally Narrowboats at Bradford on Avon Marina and put three new Ocean Class boats built at Silsden onto that stretch of the Kennet & Avon. Two more Ocean boats join the Trevor and Wootton Wawen fleets for 2026, and the selected-boats list now names five: Aurora, Mirabella, Phoenix, Selene and Vanora. Day boats run from six bases, and Trevor also operates the 48-seat trip boat Seren Fach across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, with 2026 tickets held at £10 for adults and £6 for children.
What £735 and £995 buy, and the three charges added on top
Anglo Welsh prints a single starting price on each boat page and leaves the date-by-date figure to its online availability search. Chertsey 2, a 48ft two-berth at Bunbury, shows from £735. The Admiral 2 boats at Trevor and Wootton Wawen and the four-berth Village class both show from £835, the eight-berth Firefly at Great Haywood and Butterfly at Bunbury from £1,080, and the ten-berth Ocean class from £1,450. The boat pages do not say how many nights those figures buy; the Trevor base's listing on North Wales Tourism's site gives £735 as the short-break price for two and £995 as the weekly one, and the weekly figure for 2026 should be confirmed on the booking screen before you rely on it.
Three things are added to the hire price. A fuel deposit of £110 for a week or longer, or £70 for a short break, is payable up front — the terms say eight weeks before departure, the pricing page says at booking; the boat leaves with a full tank, is refilled on return and the difference is charged or refunded. A damage waiver of £50 is compulsory and never returned. And pets beyond the first cost £25 each on a short break or £35 each on a week, up to three animals.
Money moves in two stages. A 25% deposit secures the boat and the balance is due eight weeks before the start date, or at once if you book inside that window. Pay late and the terms allow interest at 4% a year over Bank of England base rate. Holidays run for three, four, seven, ten, eleven or fourteen nights, and each length can only start on set weekdays — most seven-night routes leave on a Monday, Tuesday, Friday or Saturday.
Stacking the discounts: loyalty, second weeks and early 2027 bookings
The regular offers are generous for returning crews. The loyalty bonus climbs from 2% (capped at £40) after one holiday to 10% (capped at £190) after five years, and it sits on top of most other offers. Rebook within 14 days of getting home and the next holiday is 20% off, though that one cannot be combined with anything. A second consecutive week is half price on bookings of two weeks or more, except for the week of 22 to 29 May 2026, and 10- or 11-night holidays between 13 March and 1 November 2026 carry 20% off the brochure price.
Groups taking two or more boats from the same base on the same day get 10% off every boat after the first. Members of the British Armed Forces get 15% and Blue Light Card holders 10%, neither combinable with other offers. For 2027, week-long holidays booked by 31 January 2027 earn £25 off for every crew member under 12 or over 60, up to 10% of the basic price. Anglo Welsh also runs a price promise: find the same size and standard of boat for the same dates cheaper elsewhere and it says it will match it.
Routes measured in locks and hours, not miles
Canal holidays are planned by cruising time, and Anglo Welsh publishes it for each route. From Bradford on Avon, the run to Bath and back is 18 miles through 2 locks in about 7 hours — an easy first short break. From Great Haywood, Fradley Junction and back is roughly 12 hours through 10 locks. At the other end of the scale, Wootton Wawen to Warwick and back covers 28 miles and 76 locks in about 23 hours, and Monkton Combe to Pewsey Wharf takes around 44 hours through 74 locks, which is a full week of hard work at the paddles.
Those times assume the canal speed limit, which the Canal & River Trust sets at 4mph on narrow canals, and daylight only: Anglo Welsh's terms forbid moving the boat between sunset and sunrise and bar it from sea and tidal water altogether. The hirer has to be at least 18 when booking, and at least two adults of 18 or over must be aboard whenever the boat is under way, so a parent with young children cannot take a boat out alone.
The Llangollen breach and the two bases beside it
In December 2025 the Llangollen Canal breached near Whitchurch in Shropshire. The Canal & River Trust has closed the canal and towpath between Bridge 31A at the Whitchurch bypass and Lock 6 at Grindley Brook, and its six-month update on 22 June 2026 said it aimed to reopen by the end of the year, and its breach page puts the repair at several million pounds. About 40 million litres a day are being pumped around the site to keep water flowing downstream.
For Anglo Welsh's Trevor and Whixall bases that means about 30 miles of the canal remain open, including the whole 11-mile World Heritage stretch and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, plus 8 navigable miles of the Montgomery Canal from Frankton Junction to Crickheath. What is lost is anything that needs to pass Whitchurch, including the week-long Trevor-to-Whitchurch route, so check that a Llangollen itinerary does not depend on the closed length before paying the balance.
The clause about lock cills, and the other limits in the hire agreement
The £50 damage waiver is narrower than its name suggests. The terms exclude "damage arising from speeding, contact with a lock cill causing damage to the rudder, skeg, stern gear or boat, negligence, malicious or intentional damage", and leave the hirer responsible for any loss caused by breach of the agreement or by negligence. The cill is the stone step at the top end of a lock chamber, and the Canal & River Trust's Boater's Handbook warns that it can stick out by up to 5ft (1.5m) and only becomes visible as the lock empties. A stern caught on it is exactly the kind of damage these terms leave as the crew's bill rather than the waiver's.
Two other clauses are worth reading before booking. Anglo Welsh may ask for a pre-authorised deposit of £1,000 per boat, and its own boat pages say this is aimed at larger celebration parties. And if a boat cannot be provided and no substitute is available, the company may end the agreement, refund what has been paid and "have no further liability"; its total liability in any case is capped at the price you paid. The company's insurance does not cover personal accident or your belongings, so travel or home insurance needs to pick those up.
Cancelling, complaining and what stands behind the payment
Cancellation charges are a percentage of the hire price and climb steeply: 25% if you cancel 56 or more days out, 50% between 43 and 56 days, 70% between 29 and 42 days, 80% between 8 and 28 days and 90% inside a week. The deposit and any insurance bought are not refundable in any band, so a 25% deposit is effectively lost the moment it is paid. Cancellation insurance, bought separately, is what covers a cancellation forced by illness or a family emergency.
Complaints must reach Anglo Welsh by post or email within 30 days of the end date of the holiday, and the agreement is under English law with English courts. The terms carry no ABTA, ATOL or package-travel protection statement, so paying by credit card is the simplest safeguard if the firm cannot deliver. No Which?, Defaqto or Fairer Finance assessment of Anglo Welsh or of canal boat hire generally was found, and the North Wales Tourism listing shows no Visit Wales grading.
Where Anglo Welsh's own pages disagree with each other
The company's website is less consistent than its boats. The home page and contact page list nine bases, and the home page and a fleet page count 150 narrowboats; the 2026 brochure announcement says ten bases and 140 boats, the tenth being Tardebigge, which does not open until 2027. The home page claims nearly 60 years of experience while another fleet page says over 55. The 2026 announcement describes the new Ocean Class boats as 60ft; the Ocean Class page calls them 69ft.
The pricing page still carries the 2024 price charts and a promise of 10% off for Blue Badge holders, while the current offers page gives the 10% to Blue Light Card holders instead. A 2025 article offered 2026 holidays for a £150 deposit, against the 25% stated on every boat page. None of these is serious on its own, but together they mean the booking screen and the written confirmation, not the marketing pages, are what to rely on.
Where it wins
- No licence or experience needed, with a full handover demonstration and buoyancy aids at the base
- Parking, linen, towels, gas, water, pump-outs and Wi-Fi are all in the price
- Nine bases on six different canals, from Bath to the Llangollen and the Leeds & Liverpool
- Boats for two to twelve, including new Ocean Class boats for up to ten
- 11% off 2026 summer prices, half-price second weeks and a loyalty bonus worth up to £190
- First pet free, with dog-friendly boats in the fleet
- Route guides give locks, miles and cruising hours for each itinerary
Where it falls short
- The £50 damage waiver excludes lock-cill damage, speeding and negligence, so the costliest mishaps in a lock stay with the hirer
- Cancellation costs at least 25% of the hire price however early you cancel, and 90% inside seven days
- The company's total liability is capped at the price paid, and a boat that cannot be supplied ends the contract with a refund only
- Date-specific 2026 prices sit behind the booking engine, and the pricing page still shows 2024 charts
- The terms carry no ABTA, ATOL or package-travel protection statement
- Complaints must be lodged within 30 days of the holiday ending
- The Llangollen Canal is closed at Whitchurch after the December 2025 breach, cutting routes from Trevor and Whixall
Common questions
How much does an Anglo Welsh canal boat holiday cost?
Starting prices are £735 for a short break and £995 for a week on a boat for two. Larger boats start higher: £835 for four-berth Village class boats, £1,080 for eight-berth boats and £1,450 for the ten-berth Ocean class. Add a £110 fuel deposit for a week (£70 for a short break) and the £50 damage waiver.
Do I need a licence or boating experience?
No. A member of the base team demonstrates the boat before you leave. You must be 18 or over to book, and two adults aged 18 or over must be aboard whenever the boat is moving.
What does the £50 damage waiver cover?
Accidental damage, but not damage caused by speeding, by the boat catching a lock cill, by negligence or by deliberate acts. The waiver is compulsory and non-refundable.
Can I take my dog?
Yes, on pet-friendly boats. Up to three pets are allowed; the first is free and the second and third cost £25 each for a short break or £35 each for a week.
What happens if I cancel?
You pay a share of the hire price: 25% at 56 days or more, then 50%, 70%, 80% and finally 90% inside seven days. The booking deposit is not refundable.
Is the Llangollen Canal open for Anglo Welsh holidays from Trevor and Whixall?
Mostly. Since the December 2025 breach the canal is closed between the Whitchurch bypass bridge and Grindley Brook Lock 6, but about 30 miles stay open, including the 11-mile World Heritage section over Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The Canal & River Trust aimed in June 2026 to reopen by the end of the year.
Our verdict
Anglo Welsh is one of the easiest ways onto the English and Welsh canals: nine bases, boats from two to twelve berths, a short break from £735 and a week from £995 for two, with parking, linen and Wi-Fi included and an 11% cut to 2026 summer prices. Budget £110 for fuel and £50 for the waiver, read the lock-cill exclusion before your first flight of locks, and treat the booking confirmation rather than the website as the final word on price and boat. For a first canal holiday, a short run from Bradford on Avon or Great Haywood is a gentle place to start.
