Cynergy Bank Savings Accounts: Rates, Bonus Trap and Verdict
Affiliate disclosure: we may earn a commission if you take out a product through links on this page. It costs you nothing extra and does not influence how providers are listed.
Cynergy Bank's Online Easy Access Account pays 4.55% AER variable, and 2.00 percentage points of that figure is a bonus that runs for the first twelve months only. Take the bonus away and the underlying rate works out at roughly 2.55% AER — a figure derived from Cynergy's own headline minus its own stated bonus, because the bank does not publish the underlying rate separately. Everything else about the account follows from that one structural fact.
The rest of the proposition is unusually clean for a rate-led online bank. You can open with £1, take unlimited free withdrawals, and manage the account around the clock. Cynergy is a Which? Recommended Provider, its 4.55% account appears in Which?'s current best-buy write-up, and it holds a Defaqto Banking Award 2026 for Instant Access Cash ISAs — the only provider in this comparison set to win in that category. The bank was Bank of Cyprus UK until a change of ownership and rebrand in 2018.
What you give up is a branch network, the ability to have bond interest paid to an outside account, and any expectation that the headline rate survives its first birthday. This review sets out where Cynergy earns its place and where it quietly stops being competitive.

Unpicking the 4.55%
The Online Easy Access Account is priced in two parts: a core variable rate and a 2.00% AER bonus payable for twelve months from account opening. Both halves are variable, so the core rate can move during the bonus period as well. On the arithmetic Cynergy gives you, the post-bonus rate lands near 2.55% AER unless the bank reprices.
Practical consequence: this is a diary account. Put the maturity date of the bonus in your calendar on the day you open it, and plan to review the market at month eleven. Savers who leave money in place and never revisit it will spend year two on a rate that would not have got the account onto any best-buy table.
- Minimum opening balance: £1
- Withdrawals: unlimited and free, with no notice period and no rate penalty
- Bonus: 2.00% AER, first 12 months only
- Online ISA: 4.15% AER variable, £1 minimum, transfers in accepted, 24/7 access
The Online ISA at 4.15% is worth a look for anyone whose savings interest is close to their personal savings allowance, though the tax-free rate sits below the bonus-inflated taxable one for the first year.
Fixed bonds, cash ISAs and the 14-day window
Cynergy's fixed products behave very differently from its easy access range, and the funding mechanics catch people out.
Fixed Rate Bonds
Minimum £1,000, maximum £1,000,000. The six-month bond is shown at 4.27% AER. You have a 14-day window to fund the account after opening; once it closes, no further deposits are accepted and no withdrawals are permitted at all until maturity. Interest is paid annually into the bond and cannot be paid away to another account, which rules the product out for anyone drawing an income from their capital.
Cash ISAs
The one-year Fixed Rate Cash ISA is quoted at 4.67% AER tax-free, with a £500 minimum and a £20,000 cap on new subscriptions. Closing the ISA early costs 180 days' loss of interest. It is not a flexible ISA — money you take out cannot be replaced without using up fresh allowance.
Notice accounts
Cynergy runs 35, 95 and 120-day notice savers with a £500 minimum and a £1,000,000 maximum. The rates we could locate — around 4.12%, 4.15% and 4.18% AER respectively — come from a third-party page last updated in October 2025 and should be treated as indicative only. Check current rates with the provider before applying.
Awards, complaint volumes and the loyalty catch
Cynergy carries better independent recognition than its size suggests. The Defaqto Banking Award 2026 for Instant Access Cash ISAs is a consistency measure rather than a snapshot: a product has to sit in the top fifteen for ten of twelve months to qualify, and only 29 products out of 2,114 assessed made the cut across all categories. It is also a Which? Recommended Provider.
On complaints, the Financial Ombudsman Service recorded 83 new cases against Cynergy for the period 1 July 2025 to 31 March 2026 — the second-lowest volume of the five providers in this cluster. Per-firm uphold percentages are published only inside an FOS spreadsheet we could not access, so the proportion of those cases decided in the customer's favour is unverified.
One piece of small print deserves attention. Cynergy operates loyalty pricing for maturing bond customers only — the bank states these rates no longer apply on newly opened bonds. Loyalty pricing here is a retention tool for existing money, not a reason to bring new money in.
Living with a branchless bank
Cynergy is online-only: you can only open and manage a savings account through the website or app. There is no counter to walk into if an application stalls or a transfer goes astray. Reported friction points cluster around slow telephone support at peak times and app-based authentication that some customers find fiddly.
Eligibility is straightforward — you must be 18 or over and UK resident for tax purposes. Existing customers get a Fast Track Apply route inside online banking, which removes most of the re-keying when opening a second or third account.
Deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible person (£240,000 for joint accounts). Cynergy holds its own banking licence and does not share it with another retail brand, so there is no hidden aggregation risk of the kind that affects savers holding money with two brands under one licence.
Where it wins
- Top-tier instant access headline at 4.55% AER with unlimited free withdrawals
- Opens with just £1 — no barrier for small or trial balances
- Defaqto Banking Award 2026 winner for Instant Access Cash ISAs, a 12-month consistency measure
- Which? Recommended Provider, with the easy access account named in its best-buy write-up
- Only 83 new FOS cases between July 2025 and March 2026
- Holds its own banking licence, so the £120,000 FSCS limit is not shared with a sister brand
Where it falls short
- 2.00 percentage points of the 4.55% is a 12-month bonus; the underlying rate works out near 2.55%
- Fixed rate bonds pay interest into the bond only — no option to have it paid away, so unsuitable for income
- 14-day funding window on bonds, after which no deposits and no withdrawals are possible
- Fixed cash ISA is not flexible, and early closure costs 180 days' interest
- No branches at all; support is online and telephone only, with reported delays at peak
- Loyalty rates apply to maturing bond customers only, not to new bonds
- Notice account rates could only be sourced from an October 2025 third-party page
Common questions
What happens to my rate after the first year?
The 2.00% AER bonus falls away twelve months after opening. On Cynergy's own figures that leaves an underlying rate of roughly 2.55% AER, though both elements are variable and can change in the meantime. Diarise month eleven and compare the market before the bonus expires.
Can I take money out of a Cynergy fixed rate bond early?
No. Once the 14-day funding window closes, the bond accepts no further deposits and permits no withdrawals until maturity. If you may need the capital, use the easy access or a notice account instead.
Can Cynergy pay my bond interest into my current account?
No. Interest on fixed rate bonds is paid annually into the bond itself and cannot be paid away. Savers who need a regular income stream from their capital should look at providers that offer interest paid away — Close Brothers pays annually and at maturity to a nominated account.
Is Cynergy Bank a UK bank and is my money protected?
Yes. Cynergy was Bank of Cyprus UK until it was rebranded in 2018 following a change of ownership, and it is a UK-authorised bank. Eligible deposits are covered by the FSCS up to £120,000 per person, or £240,000 for joint accounts, on a licence Cynergy does not share with any other savings brand.
Do I need to be an existing customer to get the best rate?
No. The 4.55% account is open to any UK-resident applicant aged 18 or over. Existing customers simply get a faster application route through online banking. Loyalty pricing, where it exists, applies only to customers rolling over a maturing bond.
Our verdict
Cynergy suits a rate-aware saver with a modest or mid-sized pot who is willing to treat the easy access account as a twelve-month position and move on when the bonus ends. The £1 minimum makes it genuinely accessible, the withdrawal terms are honest, and the Defaqto and Which? recognition backs up the pricing. It is the wrong bank for anyone who wants interest paid out as income, who needs a branch, or who opens an account intending never to look at it again — set-and-forget savers will drift onto a rate around 2.55% in year two. Anyone comparing on the underlying rate rather than the headline should also price up Close Brothers' bonus-free 3.85%, if they have £10,000 to commit.
Figures were taken from each provider's own published terms on 15 August 2026. Variable rates can change at any time — confirm the current rate with the provider before applying.
