Quotezone has been comparing UK insurance since 2005, and built the country's first van insurance comparison the year after. Two decades on it runs around 5 million quotes a year for roughly 4 million users, across more than 60 insurance and financial products.

For car insurance it compares over 130 FCA-regulated UK providers in a single form, and it is free to use — the insurers pay for the introduction, not you, and the premium you are quoted is the insurer's own price. The service is run by Seopa Limited of Belfast, authorised by the FCA under firm reference 313860 and certified to ISO 27001 for information security.

One thing worth being clear on before you start: Quotezone introduces you to insurers rather than insuring you itself. Your policy, and any claim, sits with the insurer you pick. Below is how it works, what UK premiums are currently running at, and the few things worth checking before you buy.

What you get, and what it costs you

The comparison itself is free and always has been. Seopa is paid by the providers on its panel — its disclosure document puts it plainly: “We do receive a payment from the providers for the service we provide. That can be a flat fee, a commission or a combination of the two.” Nothing is added to your premium for using it.

The regulated firm is Seopa Limited, registered at the Link Building, Adelaide Exchange, Belfast. Its FCA permissions cover insurance mediation and credit broking — the second matters more than it sounds, because paying monthly for car insurance is a credit agreement rather than a payment plan, and the APR varies between insurers.

It also holds ISO 27001 certification and is registered with the ICO as a data controller. For a service you hand your address, registration and claims history to, that is worth more than a badge on a homepage. The company is one of only 11 Ofgem-accredited energy comparison sites in the UK, which is a reasonable proxy for whether a comparison business is taken seriously.

Where car insurance pricing actually sits right now

Quotezone publishes its own index of average premiums, which is useful for judging whether a quote you have been given is normal:

  • Q1 2026: £579.52 average premium, down roughly 9% year on year
  • Q1 2025: £651.25
  • Q4 2023: £885.21 — the peak of the recent cycle

Premiums have fallen appreciably from that 2023 high. If your renewal quote has gone up while the market average has fallen 9%, that is worth challenging, and it is the single most useful thing on the site.

Treat these as market averages, not as your price. Age, postcode, vehicle group, mileage and claims history move an individual premium far more than the market trend does.

What the £535 figure actually measures

The advertised figure is £535.17. The small print underneath it is doing a great deal of work, and it is quoted here in full because the difference matters:

“51% of consumers could save £535.17 on their Car Insurance. The saving was calculated by comparing the cheapest price found with the average of the next four cheapest prices quoted by insurance providers on Seopa Ltd's insurance comparison website. This is based on representative cost savings from May 2026 data.”

Two things follow from that wording. The first is 51% — roughly half of people did not achieve it. The second is what the saving is measured against: the cheapest quote on the panel versus the average of the next four cheapest quotes on the same panel. It is not measured against your current premium, and it is not measured against the wider market.

So the number describes the spread between the best result and the near-misses on a single comparison run. That is a real thing to know — it says the top five results can differ by several hundred pounds, which is an argument for comparing at all. It is not a forecast of what you personally will save by switching.

How far the panel reaches

The car insurance pages state a panel of over 130 FCA-regulated UK providers. Seopa's own corporate site describes access to over 300 providers across all its products, and the site as a whole covers 60+ insurance and financial products. Those figures are not contradictory — one is a single product line, the other is the company total — but the larger number is the one that tends to get quoted, and it is not the car insurance panel.

More important is what the disclosure document says next: “providers make their own decisions as to whether they will use comparison services. Some do not. We do not claim to be whole of market.”

Direct Line has historically been the well-known example of an insurer that stays off comparison panels. A missing insurer is not evidence of a poor panel; it is a reason to treat any comparison result as the best price on that panel rather than the best price available anywhere.

Using it well, and what to do afterwards

The service is information-only by design, so the judgement is left to you. A few things follow from that:

  • Read the cover, not just the price. The cheapest result frequently carries a higher excess or a narrower definition of cover. Nothing on a comparison screen makes that comparison for you.
  • Check the monthly cost separately. Paying by instalments is credit, and the APR varies sharply between insurers on the same panel.
  • Run a second source. Because the panel is not whole of market, one direct quote from an insurer that stays off comparison sites is a sensible cross-check.
  • Expect contact. You are being introduced to providers, and the provider you select takes over the relationship from that point.

Complaints go to Seopa first. If it is not resolved within eight weeks you can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme covers non-investment insurance mediation.

Where it wins

  • FCA authorised under firm reference 313860, with permissions covering both insurance mediation and credit broking
  • Free to use, with the fee paid by the provider rather than added to your premium
  • Around 130 providers on the car insurance panel, including insurers who do not advertise heavily
  • Publishes its own premium index, which is genuinely useful for sense-checking a renewal quote
  • Unusually blunt disclosure document that states its own limits rather than burying them
  • ISO 27001 certified and ICO registered, for a service that requires your full details
  • Twenty years of operation, from 2005, and one of only 11 Ofgem-accredited energy comparison sites

Where it falls short

  • Not whole of market, and says so itself. Some insurers refuse comparison panels entirely, so the cheapest result on screen may not be the cheapest available to you
  • The £535.17 headline applies to 51% of consumers, and measures the cheapest quote against the average of the next four cheapest on the same panel - not against what you currently pay
  • No advice and no recommendation, so choosing between cover levels and excesses is entirely on you
  • The often-quoted 300+ provider figure is the company-wide total across 60+ products, not the car insurance panel of around 130
  • You hand over full personal, vehicle and claims details to receive quotes, and the provider you pick takes over from there

Common questions

Is Quotezone an insurance company?

No. It is a comparison and introduction service operated by Seopa Limited. Your policy, and any claim, is with the insurer you choose.

Is it regulated?

Yes. Seopa Limited is authorised by the FCA under firm reference 313860, as a non-investment insurance intermediary and a credit broker.

Does it cost anything to use?

No. Providers pay Seopa a flat fee, a commission, or both. The premium you are quoted is the insurer's own price.

Will I really save £535?

Probably not, and the small print says as much. That figure applied to 51% of consumers and compares the cheapest quote with the average of the next four cheapest on the panel, using May 2026 data. It is not a comparison with your current premium.

Does it compare every UK insurer?

No. Its disclosure document states plainly that some providers choose not to appear on comparison services and that it does not claim to be whole of market.

What if something goes wrong?

Complain to Seopa first. If it is unresolved after eight weeks you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Our verdict

A well-established, properly regulated comparison service that is free to use and unusually straight about its own limits. For most drivers it is a sensible place to test whether a renewal quote is out of line, and its published premium index makes that easy to judge - if your renewal has risen while the market average fell 9% year on year, you have something to argue with. Two things to hold in mind: the £535.17 headline measures the spread between the best and near-best quotes on the panel rather than the gap from your current premium, and the panel is not whole of market, so one direct quote elsewhere is a worthwhile ten minutes.
